Natural Sciences Laboratory Assistant

Function of the Job

Assists the dean and the natural sciences instructors by providing laboratory oversight, management, and budgeting to ensure appropriate function and use. The position is 4 hours each fall and spring semesters, 2 credit hours in the summer. Position compensation is determined by contract.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee operations of all natural sciences laboratories.
  • Oversee laboratory preparation and storage areas.
  • Prepare and manage the laboratories budgets with input from the dean.
  • Utilize college processes to purchase and maintain supplies and equipment.
  • Order natural sciences laboratories supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain documentation of purchase requisitions and material safety data sheets.
  • Manage contact with suppliers and receive all items purchased by the area.
  • Maintain natural sciences laboratory inventory and equipment.
  • Assist natural sciences instructors with locating supplies and operating equipment.
  • Maintain a semester schedule of laboratory experiments for all science classes.
  • Maintain and monitor security and safety of the natural sciences storage room and laboratories, including storage and use of hazardous chemicals.
  • Coordinate handling and disposing of hazardous materials, including writing of safety and waste disposal procedures of hazardous materials.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the operation of all equipment and of all the laboratory techniques used in the natural sciences department. 

Essential Functions

  • Must understand and support the mission of the community college.
  • Must have strong communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to operate computers and be comfortable working in a technology-rich environment
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Must be able to communicate by telephone on a daily basis and be able to provide verbal/visual presentations to students, department personnel, the institution, and the Board of Trustees.

Personal Interaction

Frequent contact is made with all levels of college personnel, students and outside organizations in providing instruction in the area of expertise.

Supervision Exercised

Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over designated work-study students.

Requirements

Associate's degree with emphasis in biology and chemistry required. One year of work experience required, preferably in a laboratory setting. Good organizational skills, interpersonal skills and knowledge of scientific experiments and equipment required. Knowledge of handling of hazardous materials preferred. Background in inventory control desirable.
