Learning Commons Director

Function of the Job

The Learning Commons Director provides strategic leadership and oversight for all aspects of the Learning Commons, including its library, tutoring, and writing center services. The director is responsible for coordinating all services to support the academic success of students and faculty and for the Learning Commons programs and services provided to the college community.

Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and Strategy:

  • Provide overall leadership for the Learning Commons.
  • Lead Learning Commons personnel, professional staff and student employees, to ensure high quality services.
  • Establish and manage goals for the Learning Commons programs and services.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain procedures for the daily operations of the Learning Commons.
  • Track and report data on Learning Commons programs and services.
  • Establish and maintain mechanisms to assess and continuously improve Learning Commons programs and services.

Personnel Management:

  • Supervise, hire, train, schedule, and evaluate all Learning Commons staff, including professional and student employees.
  • Provide orientation, training, and support for all Learning Commons personnel.
  • Backup Learning Commons staff in service areas as needed.

Financial and Administrative Duties:

  • Develop and manage Learning Commons department annual budgets.
  • Oversee the acquisition, licensing, and renewal of library holdings, both print and electronic.
  • Oversee the process of loaning equipment and computer technology to students.
  • Administer the Learning Commons' appointment systems and other operational software.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable policies and contracts, such as those from the Illinois State Library.

Outreach and Collaboration:

  • Promote Learning Commons services through various methods like classroom visits and print and electronic messaging.
  • Collaborate with college faculty and staff colleagues to identify and deliver needed academic services to students.
  • Lead and contribute to cross-functional programs where academic support is integrated with other college personnel and departments.
  • Lead and/or contribute to programs and services involving external organizations and/or the college community. 

Essential Functions

  • Must support and understand the mission of the community college.
  • Must have strong communication (oral or written), interpersonal, and analytical skills.
  • Must have strong computer literacy skills.
  • Must be able to provide fluent, high-quality oral/verbal presentations to students, faculty, staff and the general public
  • Must have the ability to work weekends and evenings as required.

Personal Interaction

Frequent contact is made with all levels of college personnel, students, the general public, and outside organizations in relation to routine departmental services and duties and in providing appropriate assistance and information as requested.

Supervision Exercised

Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over the Learning Commons.

Requirements

  • A Master's degree in a relevant field such as Educational Leadership, Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Library Information Systems, or Adult Learning
  • A minimum of five years of work experience as an educator and/or in a learning assistance center, library, or adult education setting.
  • A strong commitment to fostering a collaborative and innovative learning environment.
  • Demonstrated success leading a team.
  • Supervisory experience.

Coordinates the College Risk Management Program in a capacity appropriate to this position. This includes, but is not limited to, monitoring conditions, events and circumstances present through daily College operations, and communicating observations to the appropriate supervisor or taking necessary actions to correct, prevent or limit safety problems.
